“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” Proverbs 13:20
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“You’ve got real potential, Marta. I’d like for you to shadow Pam. She can show you the inner workings of management. Her insight is priceless, so pay attention.”
Marta nodded her head enthusiastically. Trying her best not to dance in the hallway, she made her way back to her cubicle.
When Dr. Parker called her to the office, the first thing that came to mind was the recent company cuts—not a promotion! Marta was ecstatic that Dr. Parker saw a future for her.
She was not only looking forward to learning everything that Pamela was willing to teach her, but Marta was thrilled she finally had a reason to get to know this office shaker. She imagined all the wisdom that might rub off on her.
It’s common knowledge that mentorship works in the business world. In fact, mentoring is a tribal concept that goes as far back as humans have been in existence!
It all started with the family unit. Without mentorship, the human existence wouldn’t have been able to survive within our communities. There would be such a limitation on our learning in general.
Let’s face it; we all know that on some level each of us has accumulated knowledge from another person. Even if that mentorship came from a book!
Proverbs 13:20 reminds us of the simple truth we all must keep in mind: The company we keep shapes who we become.
If successful business owners have used this idea to help create and build multi-million dollar concepts; can you imagine the impact we would have as believers if we were to model our spiritual life with the same kind of discipline?
How serious are you about growing spiritually? Do you have a desire to be spiritually successful?
I challenge you to really pay attention to the people you spend your time with. Are they bringing you closer to God or further from Him? Are you affecting them or are they infecting you?
Life is short. Apparently, God thinks your choice of friends and influences is important. You should, too.
“Dear Heavenly Father,
My time is valuable. I realize that each person means very much to you. But, not every person is meant to be in my life.
Show me who I need to scale back from spending time with. Allow that person to be blessed with a friendship that will benefit them as I move in another direction. Fill the void of their presence with your presence, Lord.
There are only so many hours in the day. I must choose my friends wisely if I am to grow the way you want me to, in the direction you have for me. I’m ready to grow up.
Bring people in my life who will nurture my relationship with you. And, send people my way that I can encourage and help that won’t steer me off your path, Lord.
Bless the ones that I need to step away from. Help me to do this gracefully, Lord. It’s always hard to say goodbye.
Bring these people some new friends that can make a difference in their lives; friends that will draw them closer to you. Help me to understand that I might not be that person. Relieve me from the guilt of letting go.
I understand that I cannot do it all, nor was I called to do it, either.
Remind me that until you fill my life with these new influences, the greatest influence and wisdom of all comes from you, Lord. I will know you more the more I read your word. This extra time I will dedicate to learning more about you in my Bible reading and prayer time.
In Jesus’ precious name, I want to grow to be the person you want me to be. No more and no less, just your idea of what’s best for me, Amen.”
