“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock; if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him and will sup with him, and he with me.” Revelations 3:20
Today’s Christian daily devotional
“I can’t wait to hear Allen’s voice. It’s been so long since we’ve talked.” Christa pushed the doorbell excitedly, trying to balance her homemade plate of cookies.
Knowing how much Allen loved her grandmother’s recipe of oatmeal raisin, Christa made him an extra big batch.
Allen is annoyed when he hears the doorbell ring. He had just sat down to watch the latest MMA fight. Two of his favorite rivals were fighting for the winning title and this was the last fight of the season.
Sighing heavily, he flipped the television off. Approaching the front door, his stomach hoped that the mystery guest was one of the guys, bringing pizza and beer. Allen peered carefully through the peephole.
“Oh, no. It’s Christa.” Speaking under his breath, Allen’s socks slid across the slick wood floor; he was careful not to make a peep.
Christa was an unbelievably good friend. She was the only person there for him when he went through that terrible break-up with his first girlfriend. Christa was always the first person Allen called when his parents were driving him crazy during their divorce. On top of all that, she was the only friend that bothered helping Allen study for his Bar Exam.
But, right now things were good. Entertaining his chatty childhood friend wasn’t exactly on the top of Allen’s priority list.
Revelation 3:20 is an amazing invitation from God. It says that no matter how busy we may think God is, He sees spending quality time with us a priority. The invitation to hearing God’s voice is for…whenever!
I wonder how many of us treat God like Allen treated his trusty friend Christa. Many of us are more than ready to talk to God when things are rough. But when things are going good, how many of us have a hard time remembering to make time for God? I also can’t help but wonder if God’s open invitation and his twenty-four hour round the clock availability has also made many of us not appreciate Him like we should.
Have you ever noticed that the most humble people who rely heavily on the power of God are the ones who have gone through some pretty hard times?
Perhaps, the reason for our ‘tough seasons’ is to draw us closer to the God we seem to ignore when things are going great. But, why should our relationship with God only be centered around our own personal dramas?
Could it be that God feels used by you? When was the last time you just basked in the presence of the one who created you, blesses you and wants to be your best friend—not just your Savior?
“Dear Heavenly Father,
You’ve been so good to me. You are my Savior. When I have called out to you, your presence has given me much peace.
At times when I feel like you’re not there, I pout like a spoiled brat. I act as if you are there to serve me—to answer my every beck and call.
Lord, this is shameful. I repent of taking advantage of your goodness and grace. Thank you for being so kind and patient with me.
Lord, it makes me feel horrible when my friends call only when they want something from me. I see that I have done this to you continually during our whole relationship. Oh, Lord. I’m so sorry.
Help me to never do this again. I know you forgive easily, but I don’t want to take advantage of your grace anymore.
In Jesus’ precious name, show me when I am hurting your heart. Give me just as much compassion for you as I would for any friend I truly care about…because you are the best friend a person could ever have. I love you, Lord. Help me to love you more. Amen.”
